Geometric Shadows

The subject of this project is geometric shadows, which basically is any type of shadows. For my image, I used magnetic letter blocks to try and form the shape of a face in the shadow. In order to create this image, I used an adjustable lamp and I shown it upon the arranged letter blocks so that the shadow would be projected on the rest of the photo plane. I used shape, value, form, line, and space in order to create this image. As well as balance, contrast, emphasis, and unity. Contrast is mainly used to show emphasis on the shadow and light.

Composition rules and techniques shown in this image include the following: informal balance (because one side is lighter and has less blocks while the other side is darker and has more blocks), grouping, and low key lighting. Low key lighting is the most prominent because this is a project on shadows, so it must be dark. My project evolved because I had to play with the lighting and the setup of the letters in order for them both to work together in order to correctly form the general shape of a face.

Over the course of this semester, my concentration is societal issues. This image relates to that topic because in our society today, we focus so much on academics and test scores, that it makes up who we are as a person. Instead of examining our personalities and who we are as individuals, colleges look at soley our test scores and grades. The letters making up the head and face, represents how our academics defines who we are as students and people. This relates to my life, because I am a student that will soon be looking into colleges and putting together my transcript. But instead of putting my effort into being a good citizen, I know that colleges focus on my grades and test scores, so many students focus on that instead of their duties as a good citizen. If I could revise this project in the future, I would get thicker blocks so that the shadow would be more prominent and dominant.
