We take a lot of pride in the cleanliness standard we set our gyms in but there is a huge misconception that its only our cleaners and maintenance team that does the cleaning. For us to keep the gyms up to shape we all have our own cleaning tasks to maintain our cleaning scheuldes and check lists.
As a team our main reset times are:
Morning first thing in the day: 9 or 10am (depending when you start)
Afternoon: 2pm
Evening before we go home: 7:30pm
In the morning our cleaners often do the resets, however ensure you are always checking the resets before you start. No one wants to train in a dirty gym.
When we put weights away we don't just do it for aesthetic reason's we also do it for safety and accessibility. The weights need to be:
off the floor, and on the plate racks provided.
Never put two different weights plates on the one weight rack. Always put two different sizes on different racks.
Cable attachment's must always go in the boxes provided and onto the cable rack holders.
heavy weights should always be the closest to the ground and the lightest at the top. We wouldn't want a 20kg weight plate above someone's head and it fall on them when they try to retrieve it.
we also need to ensure that the functional equipment is out of the way and pinned to one wall. I'd recommend always putting the equipment in the same places every time to create consistency with our members.
We also want to ensure there is enough weights plates around the gym, so ensure you are spreading them around the plate loaded section in your resets. This will minimise complaints from members asking us to buy more weight plates.
Our franchise uses paper towels and spray bottles for our sanitation stations we provide to our members. Our members are advised to wipe down the equipment before and after use. We no longer use wipes, as we found they weren't being used correctly and was causing a lot of waste. We also found members where clogging the toilets with them.
For our sanitation spray we use a diluted solution of a chemical called G10 and for our paper towels we use a generic paper towel. We order our main cleaning supplies from a company called Sydney packaging.
When we are resetting our paper towels and spray bottles we need to ensure that it is 100% filled every time. If we also go onto the gym floor and see the paper towels and sprays are less then 60%, please fill them up.
Our bins get emptied daily by our cleaners, if the bin is getting extra full you can push the paper towels down to the bottom of the bin. However if its extra full and squishing the paper towels don't work you will need to empty the bin and replace the bin liner.
We also need to ensure the hand sanitiser is full. If you are low on stock you can stock up with some at Anytime Fitness Rouse Hill North as they have heaps!
We understand this isn't everyones favourite job but it has to be done. The bathroom cleans do get done in the morning but the bathrooms are unpredictable and if they aren't clean then its our job to ensure they are.
The bathroom reset and clean follows these steps:
The toilet needs a wipe down both inside and out. This includes a toilet bowl clean and a wipe down of the outside of the toilets.
the sink needs to be clean and wiped down.
the mirrors need to be splash free.
and last but not least...
the toilet paper NEEDS to be fill. We can't let our members go to the bathroom with no toilet paper.
The floors need to be vacuumed, Mopped and Rotowashed.
If all of this is done, and clean in your reset you are free to not do them... this time...
Imagine this, you decide to do a 10km run on the treadmill in the gym. You start with your first 800m you can feel yourself crack a sweat, you wipe your face with your towel its now a bit damp and you place it back on the machine. You then keep running, you get to the 2km mark and you can feel the sweat coming through your top, you keep going but let the sweat drip down for the first time in your session. You build up your run towards the 5km mark, not a care in the world and the sweat dripping down your face. You finish your session dripping in sweat feeling accomplished. When you look down at the treadmill, what do you think you see?
This is why we clean our cardio machines daily to ensure our member's always have clean, sweat free cardio machines to come too. The last thing we want is a member to come in and see disgusting sweat covered cardio machines. So here is a list of ways to keep the cardio clean!
Some clubs need to start with a vacuum as the machines get dusty, i recommend using a brush head.
Then we can move onto a wipe down and or a mop. Depending on the state of your cardio machines you can do either a wipe down, with a spray and towel or you can mop the machines down. Moping does leave it damp for a while but it helps gets the whole machine.
if the tread is a bit dirty you can turn it on, mop it down and you have the option to go over it with a rotowash.
Our cubbies is a place our member's can store their bags and belongings. But sometimes it becomes a dumping ground for random stuff, lost property and rubbish. So we need to track it so members have a clean place to leave their belongings. Daily in the morning we need to take a photo of the cubbies and if they are still there at the end of the day, its in either rubbish and or lost property.
Rubbish can go straight into the bin but the lost property can be held onto. Ask you managers how long we keep lost property and how they best dispose of it afterwards.
All of clubs see the vending machine and their pride and joy and we see it as another source of income. We make the vending machines look neat and tidy to appeal to our members to want to buy something. The stocktake of the vending is up to the managers, so if you have members who request stock please let them know. You can sell anything you like in the vending, just as long as you have 3 row's of water in the machine at all times.
The vending also has a vent that needs to be cleaned from dust too, i recommend vacuuming the vent to remove any dust. If the dust remains the machine can overheat and can burn out the machine. Causing it to stop working.
