Dr Paul Bedford is a researcher, an international speaker and fitness industry expert on retention, attrition and customer service.
He has a master’s degree in exercise and health behaviours and a PhD from the London Sports Institute, which aimed to identify interventions in a gym environment to increase adherence.
Achievements to date include the development of a physical activity strategy that increased the participation of 12,500 people in sport and exercise, and the creation of a gym induction system that increased average participation from 6 months to 13 months.
He also lectures at Middlesex University on physical activity and exercise psychology as part of their master’s degree program and at Bath University, where he tutors GP’s on brief health behaviour change interventions.
Prior to this he was at the YMCA fitness industry training for 14 years, as a course tutor, senior lecturer and business development manager.
He also led on the development and application of a bespoke behaviour change model as part of ‘YMCA Activate England’ - a national physical activity project aimed at engaging hard to reach groups. YMCA Activate England successfully engaged over 8,000 people throughout England of which; 30% were from areas of deprivation, 46% were new to exercise.
