Education is a fundamental right; however, in some countries, economic and political circumstances limit access to this basic necessity. Myanmar, particularly Yangon, is a place where one of us grew up and witnessed several instances of limited access to education. Previous experiences supporting orphanages through donations inspired us to continue this effort as a CAS project.
We began by deciding which orphanage to contact and discussing what we wanted to achieve through this project. We got in touch with the Yi Mar Parahida Orphanage in Yangon and worked together to determine how best to support the children. During the summer break, we had the opportunity to establish a connection with the orphanage and begin contributing through donations and volunteer work.
Over the course of the year, the orphanage was visited three times. From helping in the kitchen to prepare food for the children, to donating funds, school supplies, and snacks, to simply interacting with everyone, it was a very meaningful experience. The project required careful planning to determine what resources would be most useful and how we could make a positive impact.
A few months later, during a second visit in October, we continued donating school supplies and conducted learning activities with the children while listening to their life stories. Learning more about their circumstances helped us better understand how social and economic challenges can affect educational opportunities and how even small contributions can make a meaningful difference.
During the third visit, we continued supporting the orphanage through donations and had the opportunity to answer questions from the children. Throughout this project, we realized how important education is and how meaningful it can be to contribute to this cause. Moving forward, we hope to continue supporting communities in need, particularly those in Myanmar.
Overall, this experience was very meaningful to us, especially because it allowed us to contribute to a cause that we care deeply about. It also helped us develop our communication, collaboration, and planning skills while working to make a positive impact on others' lives.
