For our CAS project, we decided to help underprivileged communities by reaching out to different foundations. We contacted the Foundation for Community Health (Under the Patronage of H.R.H Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarinda). This foundation helps provide healthcare to people in poverty, and we had a thorough conversation that led us to understand that the slum communities they looked after lacked resources for bedridden patients.
After researching, we discovered that straw pillows help prevent bedridden patients from developing bed sores and ulcers resulting from areas of skin under pressure for an extended amount of time. We contacted a manufacturing company that could produce 50 pillowcases and reached out to 40 volunteers from different parts of Bangkok. We sent the necessary materials to volunteers alongside our instructional video. We also completed ten straw pillows ourselves, creating 50 straw pillows.
This project made me realize the impact each person can make on a community once deciding to initiate something to help other communities. It does not necessarily have to be something big; as long as you have initiative, even the small things help. Planning is important to ensure you can catch up on your deadlines. Because we keep in touch with the foundation and the volunteers, this experience allowed me to practice communication and effectively ensure that all volunteers clearly understood the procedures of making the straw pillows and finishing them on time for us to donate.
The most fulfilling part of this project was seeing how many volunteers joined. I was happy to see our volunteers' commitment. I realized how long it took to make just one straw pillow, having made ten of them myself. It made me realize some well-intentioned people genuinely care about others. The project was successful, and I gained communication, responsibility, and collaboration skills.
This cause is especially special to me as my father works in a public hospital, allowing me to see the situation closely. Due to the high demand, public hospitals are often underfunded and understaffed. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience, and it was satisfying to know that our hard work contributed to a noble cause.
