When I was young, I enjoyed persuading others with my ideas, which led me to participate in Model United Nations (MUN) as part of my 11th-grade club. Participating in two MUN conferences was a big challenge for me. This was my first time in the MUN, and I wasn’t sure that I could engage in debates with different groups of people with an idea. However, overcoming this challenge and my apprehensions, I learned the value of sharing and reconciling different perspectives.
I received valuable support from a friend during my MUN preparation. This support, which included a basic MUN starter kit and one-on-one speech preparation, allowed me to create my opening for NISTMUN and conduct foundation knowledge about the country I was involved in. I learned the different ways of writing resolutions and effectively using Unmoderated/Moderated caucuses for communication with other delegates about the topic. My second MUN at RIS felt more familiar. As it was held at our school, and I was living in a dorm, I could rest more and attend RISMUN in good condition. For NISTMUN, I had to wake up at 4:30 a.m. to wear a suit and go to NIST. It was only two and a half hours, but it was worth it.
By engaging in MUN, I could comfortably communicate with friends, making my personality more active and bright. With this simple change, I became happier with my school life. Right now, I’m preparing THAIMUN, which is a 3-day MUN. Although I’ve done two MUNs, it feels scary because I am overwhelmed by it being three days. I also have a summative exam right after THAIMUN. However, if I am well prepared for both tasks, this could be a perfect opportunity for further growth.
