My CAS experience in the Aladdin Jr. musical was a first for me. I had not participated much in performing arts before, so it would be an excellent opportunity to try something new. Moreover, I could meet and collaborate with new people by participating in the musical.
Although I thought singing would be the most challenging part, it was the easiest. The hardest part was memorizing the lyrics, dance choreography, and acting. Although I initially struggled to remember the lyrics, rehearsing was the perfect solution. I took time out every week for around an hour to go through and memorize the songs. I also frequently listened to them on repeat whenever I could. This made memorization easier and helped me to remember all the lyrics. My lines were fine, but I would only know when to speak or walk on stage if I knew who said what. Thus, I also had to learn other people's lines, which I initially should have considered.
One thing I had to do in the musical was to bring out a suit for the genie before a song. This was hard to coordinate because I couldn't hear the lines he had to say before we went onstage. Thus, a fun twist that Tod (who played the genie), Kewa (a fellow ensemble member), and I made was for us to give him a hat and suit after he says "som ying, som pong," which are traditional Thai names. Another obstacle I faced was coordinating dance moves with the other musical members, but we overcame this with discussion and practicing.
I am incredibly grateful for my time doing the musical because it was the most fun I'd had in months. Meeting new people and becoming friends with them while doing the musical together was one of the best things I got out of this experience. Moreover, I pushed myself out of my comfort zone and performed on stage. I will forever cherish this incredible experience.
