At the beginning of this school year, I became the vice president of Tri-M after being the former media executive in 10th grade. In short, Tri-M is a music-based honor society not dissimilar to NHS, and we have held multiple events at the school throughout the past year.
The first event planned by Tri-M was the acoustic musical performance held on the final day of school. This event was primarily organized and designed by myself, with help setting up from members of a committee I'm the head of within Tri-M. Acoustic events like this were something I had been trying to get off the ground for months, starting all the way back in February of 2024.
Getting this going was really informative for me, and learning to write a proposal about a project I was passionate about—and create a solid foundation for that project to sit atop—was something I had never done before and an invaluable skill that I've since needed to use.
The other primary event held by Tri-M this school year was the yearly Tri-M Showcase. This is an after-school showcase where all of the members of Tri-M are able to perform a song in front of an audience to display their musical proficiency.
This year, we changed it up a little and actually made it a dinner event, with students performing while the audience was able to sit down and eat. While this entire event was planned by the executive team, during the event I was, along with Nikki, the president of Tri-M, the primary person running the sound.
I was doing the sound mixing, backing tracks, setting up and tearing down equipment, and much more. Learning how to do all of this was an invaluable experience for me as someone incredibly interested in music technology and design.
Joining Tri-M has been my favorite extracurricular activity at RIS. It has taught me so much—from learning what it takes to plan and organize new activities at school to understanding how to run performances and everything that goes with them. I’ve had a lot of fun this year with Tri-M, and I will continue to work to make this honor society better each year that I am a part of it.
