Creating an illustrated children's story was a challenge our team worked tirelessly to achieve. Our goal was to create short stories with diverse characters about the climate and how humans are not separate from the environment. We had two writers, Khao Pun and Amber, and an illustrator, Gabriella. Since Amber joined our project midway through the process, she was also able to help with a story and contributed to the background coloring.
I found that writing a story was difficult at first because it was my first time writing a children's story, so balancing between being creative and child-friendly in terms of language was hard to grasp. I also found that the backgrounds took longer than I expected and keeping it fluid throughout the different stories and illustrations took a lot of time. I appreciated all that I learned regarding writing and background coloring.
When creating the concept art and final inks for children's short stories, I faced the major challenge of maintaining consistency in backgrounds and character designs throughout the piece. Consistency is essential to keep the story coherent, but it wasn't easy to achieve. So, I used references to the environments I drew, which greatly helped me. Another challenge was to ensure that the children were drawn accurately, as I am not used to drawing young children. I had to ensure the characters were realistic and had various features that other children could relate to. Although we had to cut out some stories, I believe we still achieved our goal in our work. Overall, it was an enjoyable yet challenging experience that tested my creativity and stamina within the arts.
As a writer for this story, I encountered some unexpected difficulties. Given that I've written short stories and planned novels as a hobby, I assumed it would be easy. However, the target audience was younger than I was accustomed to, so I had to simplify my vocabulary and make the plot straightforward and understandable. At first, I found it challenging, but gradually, I began to enjoy the simplicity of these stories, which made writing them an absolute pleasure.
