This mural project originated with four members wanting to display the school’s principles and activities artistically and leave a legacy behind at the school. Our first attempt was to spray paint school walls directly. However, our central conflict (aside from scheduling) was getting approval from school administrators. We recruited many students to join us in helping with painting while four of us prepared and planned everything else. We searched multiple walls on the various school premises to find the right location and size. After choosing the perfect wall, we continued with getting approval and initiating our hands-on work.
We had the idea to draw a giant phoenix in the Phoenix Hall to leave behind our legacy, surrounded by club names. We worked with the Athletic Council to allow captains of the sports teams to leave their fingerprints on the board. As we continued to reach out to the school administrators for permission to hang up our mural, we ordered the painting materials needed. Throughout this process, we worked with Ms. Cathy, the Head of the Arts Department, from first sketching the actual phoenix on the wooden panels to painting and varnishing or lacquering the artwork. We outlined the phoenix on a board from Ms.Cathy but asked the school's wood workshop to cut it out for us. We stuck the phoenix outline on another board to layer the art and then painted the phoenix.
Our project was delayed a few times. However, when the painting was done, we consulted Khun Tony, the Facilities Office supervisor, and received permission from Dr. Nathan, our principal, to hang up our art. This way, we can leave behind a legacy.
