I went on a service trip for the first time, which was a lot of fun. As a part of the STEM Club, we recently went to the Grace Foundation to conduct fun STEM activities for young students. Since the kids in the foundation need access to specific educational opportunities, we decided to engage them in fun activities and explain the science behind these experiments. Our activities included ice-breaker activities, math experiments, engineering experiments, chemistry experiments, and some essential physics and biology experiments.
When we arrived at the Grace Foundation, we were pleasantly surprised at how well it was doing in providing education to kids in need. The foundation's teachers were very supportive, helping us set up the experiments and providing the needed resources. The kids were very young, as the foundation runs from grades 1 to 5, but they were mature and were well-engaged in the hosted activities.
During the service trip, I oversaw the engineering section, where we conducted two exciting activities. The first was to make a pan flute, and the second was a spaghetti and marshmallow challenge. The kids loved and enjoyed doing these experiments, especially the spaghetti and marshmallow tower challenge. Since some of them were older than others, they helped each other engage and understand. I was thrilled to conduct these experiments with them and explain the science behind them.
We also gave several prizes to the kids for working so hard and respecting us for our hard work. Giving away to your community feels wholesome when we have the privilege. In the future, we will go there again, as the teachers at the foundation have requested we revisit since the kids had so much fun. Hopefully, next time, we can do even better experiments.
