Our project was initiated due to our concerns about the lives of children at an orphanage, as we realized that there are several things these kids lack. Upon our arrival, we learned from discussions with the manager that they rely heavily on donations, which are still insufficient. They did not receive any funds from the government and seemed to struggle to support the children, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic.
The purpose of our visit was to donate money and snacks while gaining a deeper understanding of the lives of these children. We learned that there was a selective system for children with problematic parents, such as those who were too young or had addiction issues. We also witnessed how hard-working the staff were, and their dedication to caring for the children has been evident. Additionally, we were impressed by the surrounding environment that they have built and how lively it is there. The children enjoyed activities that, combined with their energy level, made it easy for them to entertain themselves.
We noticed the children's clothing and how worn out they were, which helped us understand more about life there. Despite these problems, they seemed pretty happy with what they had despite being slim and malnourished. We researched and made healthy baked goods like scones and jam to give to them as snacks and donated some money.
The experience we gained there was priceless. It allowed us to see the world from a different vantage point that we would never have had we never gone to the orphanage. We wish to do something similar for other orphanages in the future when allowed to do so. Though the donation amount may be small, these little things will go a long way in supporting the lives of the children there.
