Last semester, I had the opportunity to visit Chachoengsao Panyanukul School, a special needs school, for a service club called “Care for Kids.” During this trip, I engaged in activities with the special needs students, including a coloring activity and a football game. I was able to meet a range of students with different disabilities, and when I got to interact with them, I learned a lot about them.
Before this trip, I thought the biggest challenge would be connecting with the kids, but after getting to know each other, it was easier than I expected. Though the students were ‘different’ from us, they were incredibly welcoming and told us about their lives.
The most memorable part of the visit was when the students prepared a music show for us, where they showcased their talents. It was eye-opening to see the teachers caring for and catering to each student, and I tried my best to help them out while we worked together on coloring a drawing.
To ensure that everybody was included, working collaboratively and planning beforehand was very important. Leading up to the visit, we worked together as a group to raise money to purchase necessities and toys for the school. This taught me the importance of initiating a plan and allowed me to collaborate with people I had never worked with before.
Another takeaway from this experience was the global issue of inclusivity. As a group, we planned different activities to ensure that everyone was actively participating and having fun. I was able to understand the students’ ways of thinking, as well as the weight of the teachers’ responsibilities. I became more open-minded and more understanding of people with special needs. After this visit, I had to adapt myself to cater to different students, which taught me a lot about social awareness.
Though the students have special needs, I felt that I was able to connect with them through playing football out in the sun. From working and planning with new people for a good cause with global significance, I feel that I have grown to become more aware, and I want to continue engaging in service activities that help our community become more inclusive.
