Out of interest during my first few days of the school year, I heard the principal mention the fall play and was very excited—especially since it was about Harry Potter. I tried auditioning for it without knowing much context or who I would play.
At first, I wanted to be the antagonist, but the audition results came in, and I was one of the main protagonists. I am the son of Harry Potter, Albus Severus Potter. I didn’t know what I was getting myself into at first, but I was very excited about the role.
The play was mildly successful in my opinion, as it was done over a short period. However, because of that, it felt a bit rushed, and I think certain magical effects and scenes could have been done better—especially in Act 2—since our rehearsals were also quite limited. Most of us had other commitments, so we couldn’t rehearse as much as we wanted.
There was a lot of improvisation that I had to do in almost every performance, because the show had to go on. As you know, no performance is supposed to be 100% perfect. There were times when people would forget lines or props, and we had to improvise on the spot—including myself. Sometimes I had to skip a few lines or jump ahead if my co-actors or actresses paused for too long!
It was a great and fun experience. I made many new friends, especially since this was my first year, and I connected more with those I already knew. It took a lot of my time, but overall, the costumes and props brought the play together. The memories I made during this play will be something great to look back on in years to come.
Acting is something I haven’t done a lot since COVID, so this felt really special.
