During the first quarter of IB, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the 2024 International Peace Conference at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. Receiving the invitation was both surprising and unexpected. The World Fellowship of Buddhist Youth (WFBY), with whom I had previously studied Buddhism, sent the invitation.
Unlike any other ordinary letter, this one specifically requested that I speak on their behalf at UNESCO. I immediately recognized this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I was ready to make a difference.
In preparation for the speech, I spent countless hours brainstorming ideas. My goal was to create a lasting impact by inspiring change via a solution that incorporates aspects of my culture. These efforts eventually culminated in the idea of greng-jai as a solution for peace. Greng-jai in itself, without an English translation, is a hard word to describe and comprehend. But that's its charm. I felt that my culture depended on it, and I was sure that it would bring peace for years to come, anywhere, anytime.
UNESCO has set the stage with countless ambassadors of country, culture, and peace. I started my speech by defining greng-jai, which, in essence, is that delicate balance of consideration and reluctance to impose—a voluntary restraint to avoid causing inconvenience, not forced usage of sympathy.
Utilizing this concept, I broadened its application from familial communities to the global stage by proposing strategies such as diplomatic protocols that embody the spirit of greng-jai in international relations. I emphasized how embracing greng-jai can lead to greater understanding and, ultimately, peace among individuals and nations, especially with the current turmoil around the world.
The ending to my speech was met with applause and agreement by many audience members. Notably, a few French-speaking diplomats approached me afterward, mentioning how greng-jai is so pertinent to their diplomatic relations, while contrasting it to Western individualism. They also showcased their sincere appreciation toward my effort, which was heartening to me, despite my role as a mere presenter of a local philosophy.
Still, this transformative experience left an exceptional impact. Not only had it sharpened my public speaking skills, but it had also fundamentally reshaped my understanding of global citizenship. It has forged connections and perspectives that I will forever remember in my growing commitment to fostering cross-cultural understanding—a vital step toward creating a more noble and beautiful world.
