We initiated this project to gather and donate drugs to Umphang Hospital. We obtained a sum of approximately 500,000 baht in both direct monetary donations and medical supplies. We then offered our donations and underwent a one-week shadowing experience at the hospital from October 14–18, 2024.
Umphang Hospital is one of the most inaccessible places in Thailand, requiring a difficult journey, including a five-hour road trip through a mountain to the only access point to Umphang. The hospital is a prime example of having a seemingly infinite number of patients to treat while having very limited resources at hand. This is especially true due to its location on the Thai-Myanmar border. In speaking with the director of Umphang Hospital, we were especially impressed by the hospital’s creative medical interventions to help the local people. One of the most impressive methods involved dumping a calculated volume of chlorine into water sources at the peak of the mountain to reduce the spread of cholera in all surrounding villages.
On the first day, we headed to Trat Hospital, which serves as the center hospital for Trat Province. This is where all the critical patients or those requiring tertiary care are sent. On the second day, we visited a refugee camp distributing various donations. The rest of the days were spent shadowing various wards in Umphang Hospital.
For everyone on the trip who was interested in medicine, this experience largely solidified our feelings about whether or not we wanted to further pursue this field. We not only saw the patients we would be treating, but also had the opportunity to ask the doctors important questions about what our future careers may entail. Coming back, we were not only fulfilled from helping people, but we were also more decisive in our futures.
As a future project, we may leave the contacts for this hospital to the next generation of students at RIS in case they also wish to donate and construct their own project. Now that most of us know where we are going for university, we believe that our experience at Umphang Hospital will be one to remember.
