For my final data visualization project, I chose to work with a data set showing almost 3000 languages that are extinct, or in danger of becoming so. The source for this data is United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
I wanted to create a visualization that would allow users to see how many languages are considered in danger, and to be able to move freely around the map to see patterns in extinct languages, and to share the vast reality of languages in danger of extinction.
In my visualization, the data is represented as dots that represent a language, the latitude and longitude of the dots are the country where the language is spoken, and they are color coded by degree of endangerment.
To interact with the visualization, try hovering over the dots which shows the number of native speakers. You can also click with your mouse to switch through degrees of endangerment.
One interesting thing I noticed during this project is that in California, the majority of the data points are labeled as "Extinct".
Something I still wonder about is how rapidly this dataset is changing, and what it would look like if it was made more recently. (This dataset is from 2016)
