For my final data visualization project, I chose to work with a data set from Harvard that includes the Silk Road with many different data points about the population, distances to the closest trade routes, natural paths, etc. across the years.
I wanted to create a visualization that would allow users to explore the silk road though many different lenses to fully appreciate the scale and expansion that happened during this era.
In my visualization, the data is represented as a map with the dots representing the population. The key represents all the different variables that you can interact with in this visual.
To interact with the visualization, try using the slider to see how cities expanded and collapsed. Hover over the dots to find out moire information about the cities.
One interesting thing I noticed during this project is how diverse all these places were with their stats and locations.
Something I still wonder about is how this data was collected—from all the years.
