For my final data visualization project, I chose to work with a data set I actually made to help my grandmother with her work. It was professionally checked and used in their own data collecting.
I wanted to create a visualization that would allow users to see where and how many different colleges were in different states across the country.
In my visualization, the data is represented as dots in varying sizes based on how many colleges are in each state. Each dot represents one of the US states in alphabetical order. The color also corresponds to how many collegs there are and that key to that is located in the top left corner.
To interact with the visualization, try hovering over each dot. It will give you the state and number of colleges.
One interesting thing I noticed during this project is that the states that had more colleges tended to have a very concentrated amount in a few cities, rather than being evenly spread and based on the size of the state.
Something I still wonder about is how the amount of colleges in a state affects the percentage of people in that state that choose a college in their home state rather than transfering out.
