For my final data visualization project, I chose to work with a data set about languages around the world that are of varying degrees of endangerment.
I wanted to create a visualization that would allow users to explore various languages ranging from vulnerable to extinct.
In my visualization, the data is represented as dots on a map based on the latitude and longitude of where the language is in the world. The color indicates the level of endangerment of each language, with black being extinct, red being critically endangered, orange being severely endangered, yellow being definitely endangered, and green being vulnerable.
To interact with the visualization, try hovering over the dots to see what the name of the language in English is.
One interesting thing I noticed during this project is that there are no languages in this data set from Antarctica. I also observed that there are clusters of languages in certain spots on the map.
Something I wonder is how many languages have existed throughout the era of humankind, and how many of those languages still exist today.
