For my final data visualization project, I chose to work with data representing extinct languages, and the number of speakers. This interested me because I could think about how our languages and other languages compared with speakers.
I wanted to create a visualization that would allow users to see the data represented visually and compare all of the thousands of languages together. I made a slider so that users could quickly toggle between languages.
In my visualization, the data is represented as either quantities, as the statistics are displayed at the top of the screen, or they are represented as a portion of a rectangle, which represents the Eastern Slovak speaker, which is the largest quantity of speakers within one of my endangered languages.
To interact with the visualization, try pressing buttons or moving the slider at the bottom of the screen. Try pressing the space bar to animate.
One interesting thing I noticed during this project is that there are so many languages with small amounts of speakers. People should try and spread these languages so that they do not go extinct.
Something I still wonder about is how I might represent this data in a different way. I couldn't think of many ways to look at this data, so my idea was pretty basic. I wonder how I might build on this visualization and enhance the communication of data to the user.
