For my final data visualization project, I chose to work with 3 datasets on rare wildlife in CA: from The California Native Plant Society, The US Fish and Wildlife Service, and from CaliPopGen. I assembled the data from the CaliPopGen species with the status of those species from the other two datasets.
I wanted to create a visualization that would allow users to see the rarity of plants along with the places in which they have been sampled (or where they live).
In my visualization, the data is represented as color-coded dots (the darker purple, the more endangered). These dots show data on kingdom, phylum, taxon group, species, status, and area name.
To interact with the visualization, try hovering over dots. You can even filter these by kingdom, phylum, and taxon group.
One interesting thing I noticed during this project is how much diverse wildlife is everywhere around us!
Something I still wonder about is how we can take steps so that all species will be less threatened and continue to live on in California.
