For my final data visualization project, I chose to work with a dataset that conveyed the trend in new case decrease, death rate decrease, and survival rate increase in colon cancer in the US from 1975-2020.
I wanted to create a visualization that would allow users to see representations of each of these three pieces of data to show our improvement in treating and combating colon cancer.
In my visualization, the data is represented as three scatterplots which each represent either year vs new cases, year vs death rates, and lastly year vs survival rates.
To interact with the visualization, press either 0, 1, 2, or 3 to switch screens in order to view the data. Pressing 0 will return you to the original screen while 1, 2, or 3 will show a scatterplot representing one of the three subsections in the dataset.
One interesting thing I noticed during this project is our improvement in not only limiting the treatment of colon cancer but also our prevention. It is one thing to cure those who are diagnosed with a condition but preventing others from getting it in the future is also an important aspect to our healthcare system.
Something I still wonder about is if we continue to moderate colon cancer like shown in the data, at what point in time will it be exterminated from our planet and humans will never be diagnosed with it in the future?
