October 1949 -- During the latter part of 1949, the first phase of construction was completed which included removal of obstructions, grading and paving of three runways 4,100 feet long by 100 feet wide, and ramp area. Phase I work was completed just in time for Governor Adlai Stevenson’s aircraft to land for a visit at Rockford.
