It was not until 1972–58 years after President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day official–that the day honoring fathers became a nationwide holiday in the U.S.
Father's Day Ad - Rockford Register Star 6/4/1981.
Side Note: The pedestal clock in the ad may look familiar to many. The Seth Thomas Clock was erected in June of 1903 by Al E. Henry at 118 West State Street. All the mechanical parts were located beneath the sidewalk; where the clock was wound and time was changed.
In 1913, W. D. Anger purchased the store and kept the clock in service. The clock was struck down by a reckless driver in 1950 and in 1958 it was downed by a city bus. It was repaired and remained a downtown landmark until 1972 when it was taken down for Urban Renewal.
The clock was later moved to Cherry Vale Mall and then Edgebrook Shopping Center. Location at present time??
