Camp Grant was opened just south of Rockford in 1917 to train soldiers for World War I. The camp was named in honor of American Civil War general Ulysses S. Grant. Camp Grant covered an area of 5,600 acres during World War I . It became one of the largest military training facilities in the United States during that time.
It was closed in 1921 and turned over to the Illinois National Guard for use as a training center in 1924.
