NIBCA Contractors Deliver Projects During Golden Age of Architecture

The 1929’s is considered by many to be the “Golden Age” of America’s architects. With buildings soaring in height and influences abounding from Europe after the “Great War”, architects utilized daring concepts with new materials and methods. Among those was Jesse Barloga, who designed the Rockford News Tower, originally the “Republic Building,” housing the Rockford Daily Republic.

Security Building, a long time association member, completed the project which contained the famous “Barloga Arch” and other innovations.

The News Tower has seen many changes during its 89 year history, including the addition of a special addition to house a 15.9 million dollar press in 2006 by NIBCA member, Cord Construction Company. The addition was designed to blend with the original “Art Deco” building, combining the newest technology with historic design.

Original design of the Republic Building - October 1929.

The Great Depression created a need to lower costs and the size of the project was changed - April 1931.
