On this day in 1958, the United States Congress passes legislation formally inaugurating the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
After the Soviet Union embarrassed the United States with it's successful launching of Sputnik, the first satellite to orbit around the earth, the U.S. was now committed by establishing NASA as the coordinating body of the U.S. space program.
And the Space Race began.
