On this day in 1945, at 8:16 a.m., Hiroshima, Japan is hit with the world's first atom bomb. An American B-29 bomber, the Enola Gay, drops the bomb, over the city killing approximately 80,000 people.
U.S. President Harry S. Truman, made the decision to use the atom bomb to end World War II.
Three days later, another atom bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, resulting finally in Japan’s unconditional surrender.
