On this day in 1969, "Three Days Of Peace & Music," also known as The Woodstock Music & Arts Festival, began with more than 400,000 people attending to see thirty-two acts perform.
The Woodstock festival didn’t actually take place in Woodstock. There was no suitable site in Woodstock, so organizers tried to find the place near Wallkill, 40 miles away. But residents blocked their plans, and finally they made a deal for $75,000 with a dairy farmer, who let the festival happen on his 600 acres of land in Bethel, NY.
Prices for buying a three day pass for three days of music and fun at Woodstock was $18.00 in advance and $24.00 at the gate. With so many people, organizers couldn't control the gates and many entered for free.
