October 2018 - Rockford Public Library is completely torn down as part of an expensive makeover. Demolition and environmental remediation at the old library is being performed and paid for by Commonwealth Edison as agreed, for an environmental cleanup of the soil beneath the library. ComEd has agreed to spend up to $33 million on the new building starting in 2019. In 2016, the board bought the land next door, 227 N. Wyman St., putting the entire swath of riverfront property from Mulberry to Jefferson streets under the library’s ownership.
While the Rockford Public Library is making way for a new facility, the Hart Interim Library located at 214 N. Church Street was renovated by Scandroli Construction Company.
