1.What programme should my child sign-up for?
-Each student's grade level (*Infant School, **Junior School, Middle School and High School) have different programmes to choose from depending on the school season.
School Team Basketball
After School Basketball
Phoenix Basketball Club
*Infant School: only After School and Phoenix Club programmes (paid activity)
**Junior School: includes Junior School Basketball Sports Club every Fridays (free activity)
2.Which programmes are free and/or paid?
-School Team Basketball is a free activity whereas After School Basketball and Phoenix Basketball Club are paid activities.
3.Why do you offer paid activities when there are free programmes?
-We offer paid programmes as School Team (Preseason/In-Season) basketball is not offered in all seasons for each grade level. For example, School Team Basketball for Middle School is only offered in Season 2, 3 and 4. For High School, only in Season 1 and 2. We have made changes for the Junior School that their basketball activity has been made all year round which is great for them should they choose to do this for the whole year.Â
-In addition, most if not all students who are not confident to do School Team Basketball will opt to participate in after school activities instead to gain experience. Furthermore, some students feel that they also need more days to train and workout to consistently develop their skills which they can find in our paid programmes.
4.There are too many programmes, I am confused which one to sign up for.
-First, we highly suggest that you sign-up for the School Team if it is available to your grade level during the current season (1/2/3/4). Next, if School Team basketball is not available, you may opt to do other free sporting activities depending on your preference. For students who are basketball enthusiasts, we offer an After School Basketball program during weekdays to help develop individual skills. Some students find it as a pathway to learn by playing games through fun and leisure. Another is the Phoenix Basketball Club program, this is our community programme also offered to non-UWC students that is offered all year round. However, since After School and Phoenix Club are paid activities, this is not compulsory and it entirely depends on individual preferences.
5.During the sign-up period, I did not see any basketball activity for my grade level. How come?
-School Basketball is only available during a specific season for each grade level. Please click here for more information.
6.My child wants to join the school team eventually during their season, will it help joining the After School programme?
-Yes. Having a guided basketball training activity helps develop students to improve their skills - provided that child/student is committed to attending most if not all sessions. However, since it is a paid activity, this is not compulsory and it entirely depends on individual preferences.
7.I signed up for Junior School Basketball Sports Club every Fridays. How come I did not get allocated?
-Please keep in mind that this free programme is very popular to all Junior School students. Each season we allocate 30 to 40 students. Putting it as your first priority when signing up will help but not all the time since we can only select a number of students that will make the activity work for each season.
8.Are all lessons in the After School programme done in the outside courts?
-By default, we are using the Junior School Outdoor Courts. For Infant School, we try our best to be in the RBT regularly unless there are other activities/exhibits that prohibit us to do so. But overall, sessions will be done outdoor. However, if there will be wet weather and/or thunder-lighting. We will relocate to an alternative venue that is provided for the activity (Sports Hall/Bus Bay/Exam Hall/RBT).
9.My child has been playing for the team since last year. Do they still need to attend trials?
-Yes, your child will need to attend all trials whether it is for School or Phoenix Basketball Club program. This will help the coaches evaluate all players including newcomers in selecting/putting players in their appropriate teams or groups.
10.For the After School programmes, what is the difference between Skills Development and Skills Performance?
-Skills Development are for students who are new, fairly new or lack confidence in playing basketball and would like to explore the sport further to build on their interest and growth. Skills Performance are for students who have already gained fundamental skills and would like to harness those skills even further.
11.I signed up for Skills Performance but I am currently doing basic basketball drills?
-Coaches will evaluate students on how they perform during the sessions. If they see that some students need to go back to basic fundamental skills, then they will do so in order to help their developmental growth to advance later on.
12.I signed up for Skills Development but I am currently doing more advanced basketball drills?
-Coaches will evaluate students on how they perform during the sessions. If they see that some students are well and capable, then our coaches will help push them further by giving them more challenging drills to help their progress.
13.What is the difference between JS Sports Club (free) and JS Skills Development (paid)
-While both activities tackle individual skills development and to learn basic fundamental concepts in basketball. The main difference is that JS Sports Club is a high ratio activity, it is consistently composed of 35 to 40 students each season. While the JS Skills Development, it is a low ratio activity that is composed of 10 to 12 students at max which help our coaches with individual progression and to maximise time for more skills learned each season.
14.Can I still join the After School program even in the middle of the season?
-Yes. You may still join during the middle of the season provided there is a slot available on the preferred day/time you are keen on signing up for. If not, we may suggest alternative days/times that has space to accommodate incoming students. Take note that we are able to prorate the cost depending on your official start.
15.Can I still join the Weekend Programme / Phoenix Basketball Club even in the middle of the season?
-Yes. You may still join during the middle of the season provided there is space available in the age group that you are keen on signing up for. If the age group has a full roster (team of 12), we may suggest alternative ways to make it work for you. Take note that we are able to prorate the cost depending on your official start.
16.For Phoenix Basketball Club, I can only attend 1 out of the 2 trainings due to other commitments? Is that ok?
-We recommend attending all training sessions. But if there are conflicts due to other commitments (tuition/class/sport/etc), you may opt to attend what you only can. However, we will prioritise students (including team groups) to those who are committed to attend all sessions regularly. This means that you will be relegated if you are a first team caliber player and so on.
17.What is the difference between School Season, After School and Phoenix Basketball Club Season?
-School and After School Season - we have 4 seasons (1/2/3/4)
Season 1 (Sep-Nov)
Season 2 (Nov-Jan)
Season 3 (Feb-Apr)
Season 4 (Apr-Jun)
-Phoenix Basketball Club - we have 2 seasons (1/2)
Season 1 (Aug-Dec)
Season 2 (Jan-Jun)
