What is comprehension?
Comprehension is the understanding and interpretation of what is read. To be able to accurately understand written material, children need to be able to:
Decode what they read
Read with accuracy, fluency and expression (To achieve this you must read a text three times)
Make connections between what they read and what they already know (Prior Knowledge)
Think deeply about what they have read
Recall as many facts and details as possible
Understand both fiction and non-fiction texts using 12 different strategies as described below.
