What is comprehension?

Comprehension is the understanding and interpretation of what is read. To be able to accurately understand written material, children need to be able to:

• Decode what they read

• Read with accuracy, fluency and expression (To achieve this you must read a text  three times)

• Make connections between what they read and what they already know (Prior Knowledge)

• Think deeply about what they have read

• Recall as many facts and details as possible

• Understand both fiction and non-fiction texts using 12 different strategies as described below.
