What does it mean to compare and contrast when reading a text?

Comparing and Contrasting is looking at what is the same and what is different between two things. Comparing is looking at what is similar, and contrasting is looking at the differences. Watch the You Tube video below for further explanation of Compare and Contrast.

A Venn Diagram can be used to write down and visually show comparing and contrasting. View the Venn Diagram below as an example.

Task: Use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast yourself with another class mate.

Use the following topics as ideas to compare and contrast yourself with a classmate using a Venn Diagram. You can also add your own ideas.

• Personal Description, age, boy/girl, hair colour, eye colour, height (shorter/taller/same), number of brothers/sisters, where live (suburb name), etc 

• Favourite food, toys, games, activities, places to visit, etc, school subjects

• Out of School clubs, etc

• Free time past time activities

Finally join with another group to share Venn Diagrams and discuss.
