What is summarising?
Summarising asks you about the main points of a piece of writing. When you answer questions about a summary, first ask yourself, “What is the main idea of the passage?”
You summarise fiction and non-fiction texts using different strategies. For fiction texts we use SWBST and for non-fiction texts we MUSH.
Activity 1: Practising Summarising a Fiction Text
Learning Intention: I can summarise a fiction text using the strategy SWBST.
Read a picture story book or easy fiction chapter book and using your Reader's Notebook use the SWBST sub headings to summarise the text.
Share your summary with a classmate afterwards.

Learning Intention: I can summarise a non-fiction text by identifying the main idea of each paragraph in a passage and recording these together to create a summary.
