Grade 5 and 6 STEAM Technology

HOME AUTOMATION WITH Artificial Intelligence (AI) (1 of 4)

This is part 1 of a 2 part lesson focusing on Artificial Intelligence, the role it currently has in society and what the future holds.

LI: To develop an understanding of the role AI could play in the average home

Mini Lesson:

Now with the emergence of AI and the opportunities for voice commands, another level of automation is possible.

There are many examples of Artificial Intelligence in our current society, some examples include:

  • Siri and other voice command systems on SMART Devices

  • Automatic breaking systems controlled by AI systems installed in Modern Cars

  • AI monitoring online shopping habits to target people with advertising

  • Some automated systems in houses

What would this type of system look like in a house?

TASK:

  • Sketch the floor plan of a typical house, draw and label five ways that you could make the home a ‘smart home’ through automation.

  • Which of them require AI? Which require sensors? How would digital and electrical systems interact with each other?

QUESTIONS FOR YOU TO CONSIDER:

    • Have you used home automation personally? What were your experiences?

    • Why do people use home automation?

    • What are some typical use cases for home automation?

    • How might a person with a disability benefit from home automation?

#In preparation for the next part of the task consider the following three categories:

    • Input: What forms of human input might a home automation system process (speech, written text, gestures etc)?

    • Decision-making: How might a home automation system process human input in order to decide what needs to be done?

    • Output: How might a home automation system turn a decision into a physical action? This question alludes to what is known as ‘actuators’, such as computer-controlled electronic switches or motors.

#Please create a sketch and include an explanation of how AI would be used in the house
