ME AND MY SHADOW

LEARNING INTENTION AND SUCCESS CRITERIA

LI: To understand the effect of the location of the sun on shadow formation

I can identify an objects shadow

Apply my understanding of how the sun can create a shadow on an object

I can create a structure to stop an object from seeing it’s shadow

I can reflect on how the location of the sun effects the location of a shadow



ENGINEERING TASK - Shade the Toy

Tuning in: In the morning stand in the sun outside on your drive way or a concrete path and locate your shadow. Using chalk create, trace, and label your shadow. Wait a few hours and then go and check to see if the shadow has moved.

Where were the shadows?

Will they be in the same place at the end of the school day, why not?

Why were the shadows different sizes?

Materials:

(if you don't have these items, you can use any art and craft material available around the house)

  • Torch

  • Small Stuffed or plastic toy animal

  • Cling wrap

  • Cotton balls

  • Craft Sticks Rubber bands Straws Paperclips Paper towel rolls

  • Balloons Crayons Pipe cleaners Clear Tape Ruler

TASK: TO UNDERSTAND HOW A SHADOW IS FORMED

  1. Using the materials above (or anything you can find around your house), construct a structure that will stop your toy from seeing it's shadow

  2. The structure needs to be the same size as the toy

  3. You can sketch your design and then build it

  4. In the morning place your toy and the structure outside on a concrete surface

  5. Observe the toy's shadow and see the structure blocks it

QUESTIONS:

  • Did your structure block the shadow?

  • How is a shadow formed?

  • Is a shadow sometimes bigger than the size of the object?
