This edcamp is for BPS educators supporting the writing skills of students in grades K-12. Join us to connect with BPS colleagues and discuss the question, "What explicit teaching moves support our students in becoming engaged and empowered writers?" Participants will earn 2 PD hours.
BPS Participants will also be awarded 2 PD hours for attending.
THANK YOU for all the educators who attended our virtual Edcamp on the topic, “What strategies, resources, and procedures can we use to develop our students' foundational reading skills?” We had 46+ people attend the session from 30+ different schools/departments across BPS and beyond.
After the session, 95% of participants (36 out of 38 exit ticket responses) said that they would recommend this session to a colleague. Additional comments from participants:
“I feel both relieved that people outside my school are going through the same challenges, and encouraged that there are resources available to start thinking about solving issues in implementing the Rules Based Reading instruction our students deserve.”
“It was a great opportunity that I wish happened more often.”
“I learned (rather than just suspected/hoped) that there are other teachers who teach as I do and have students benefiting from rules-based instruction as mine do.”
Based on this session, here’s some things that participants learned/ want to try in their own classrooms/schools:
“That kinesthetic and multi-sensory approaches should not stop in the lower grades!”
“I knew the importance of visuals but having someone share their screen and actually show us the resources she used was very beneficial and something I would like to take back to my classroom.”
“I want to capitalize more on the overlap between ESL and all striving beginners to give both groups more direct instruction time.”
Edcamps are “unconferences” where there is no pre-set session agenda. The New York Times describes Edcamps as “an innovative form of training with no predetermined speakers or sessions, led by the participants themselves.” At an Edcamp, participants create the session topics at the start of the event based on their interests and questions. Edcamps provide educators with a professional learning model for growing, connecting, and sharing expertise with others in the room.
Edcamp is a chance to connect, learn from each other, and figure out together how to think through new ways to create deeper learning experiences for students. We hope you’ll leave with new ideas and new connections.
