SLIFE Native Literacy + Math Learning Site
In a Learning Site, educators come together for a full day in a live classroom around a common area of practice (also can accommodate a ½ day model). Participants talk with the host teacher and set goals for their own classrooms. Participants who continue the learning through virtual follow-up sessions are also able to earn an academic ladder credit.
SLIFE Math & Native Literacy Learning Site: Join colleagues to investigate the question “"How do we differentiate learning to develop all students’ native literacy and math skills in a SLIFE classroom?" on 2.5.24 at Frederick Pilot Middle School. This site will demonstrate two teachers’ approach to this question as we observe live instruction. After the observation, participants will have the opportunity to think through and debrief with the host teachers about the hows and whys of their teaching practice. Includes a virtual pre-session and follow-up virtual sessions focused on implementing the learning in your setting. Hosted by Mayra Da Rocha and Faustino Ajanel, SLIFE teachers at the Frederick, and the Telescope Network. Earn an ALC or PD hours.

THANK YOU for all the educators that attended the Learning site at the Frederick Pilot Middle School on the topic “How do we differentiate learning to develop all students’ native literacy and math skills in a SLIFE classroom?” Our host teachers were Mayra Darocha & Faustino Ajanel. We had 9 people attend the session from 5 different schools/departments across BPS.
After the session, 100% of participants (9 out of 9 exit ticket responses) said that they would recommend this session to a colleague. Additional comments from participants:
"I enjoyed the time before to plan and prepare; the observation was very useful and practical and necessary; and all of the post-planning and debriefing was essential as well. It was amazing to meet and collaborate with other SLIFE teachers. We need to continue PD like this! Love it!"
"I absolutely love peer observations in similar classrooms where I can observe all the teaching "moves", structures, routines, curriculum materials, etc. ALL of this helps me to evaluate my own practice and get new ideas. The conversation with peers about what we observed, questions it made us think, etc. is SO valuable and is the PD I really need and will NEVER get within my own building because it is so program specific.”
We asked, “What's one thing that went well during this session?” Sample responses:
“I am definitely walking away with more ideas for how to encourage my students to be more independent thinkers and work together in positive ways.”
“Seeing a different structure of a Native Literacy/Math SLIFE classroom was immensely useful and is something that myself and my co-teacher teaching these subjects have struggled to implement and figure out the logistics of at our school. The small group structure seemed to have a lot of benefits for the students.”
“It gave me new ideas on how I can address my students' needs in different ways.”
“How important it is to group students in a way for them to feel comfortable in their learning space and assess them and challenge them in new settings as needed or as they make progress.”
