Ethnic Studies Learning Site

In a Learning Site, educators come together for a full day in a live classroom around a common area of practice (also can accommodate a ½ day model). Participants talk with the host teacher and set goals for their own classrooms. Participants who continue the learning through virtual follow-up sessions are also able to earn an academic ladder credit.

Promoting Discourse in Ethnic Studies Classroom: If you or an educator is working toward improving student discourse regarding Ethnic Studies concepts, here's an opportunity to collaborate with fellow Ethnic Studies educators for a half-day session in a live classroom focused on a shared area of practice. Taking place on Feb. 14th, this learning site addresses the question, "How can we use discourse and discussion to deepen students’ understanding of ES concepts?" in the context of a diverse group of learners. The session will showcase one teacher's approach to addressing this question. Following the observation, educators will have the opportunity to reflect and discuss with the host teacher about the hows and whys behind their teaching practices, with follow-up sessions for an ALC/PDPs.

THANK YOU for all the educators that attended theLearning Site at Boston Adult Technical Academy  on the topic “How can we use discourse and discussion in the Ethnic Studies classroom to deepen students' understanding of race/racialization?”  Our host teacher was Amrita Dani  (Ethnic Studies & ESL 3 Teacher) and debrief facilitator was Neema Avashia from the BPS Ethnic Studies Department. We had 11 participants join from 8 different BPS schools/departments.

After the session, 100% of participants said that they would recommend this session to a colleague. We asked, “What's one thing you learned today that might benefit your students?"
