Productive Struggle Learning Site
In a Learning Site, educators come together for a full day in a live classroom around a common area of practice (also can accommodate a ½ day model). Participants talk with the host teacher and set goals for their own classrooms. Participants who continue the learning through virtual follow-up sessions are also able to earn an academic ladder credit.
Productive Struggle in Math: If you or an educator you know is working toward improving students' stamina to productively struggle and problem solve in math, this is an opportunity to join other educators for a ½ day in a live classroom around a common area of practice. This learning site on 12/8/22 places the question of "How do we support students to be math problem solvers while engaging in productive struggle and collaboration?" within the context of diverse learners. Led by Natalia Piazzarolo Meira (Brighton High School), the site will demonstrate one teacher's approach to answering this question while thinking through providing access points for students and building in opportunities for math conversation. After the observation educators have a chance to think through and debrief with the host teacher around the hows and whys of their teaching practice with potential for follow up coaching sessions for an ALC/PDPs.
Time: One half school day (sub $ available)
Feedback: 99% recommended
Credits: Up to 12 PD hours or 1 ALC
Capacity: 10-15 per session
Mode: In-person
Resources: Learning Site Packet, Debrief Notes, Virtual Session Slide Show
NEW DATES Added! 3/21 + 3/23
THANK YOU for all the educators that attended the Learning site at Brighton High School. Our host teacher was Natalia Piazzarolo Meira (Grade 11/12 SEI PreCalc @ Brighton High). Due to high demand we were able to run this Site 3 different times. In total We had 35 participants join from 17 different BPS schools serving populations representing grades 6-12 in this session.
After the sessions, 100% of participants (34 out of 34 exit ticket responses) said that they would recommend this session to a colleague. Here are some additional comments from participants:
I loved everything about this session! I loved the breakfast, I loved the group work focusing on the different parts of productive struggle. I loved debriefing with the lead teacher. I loved our coworkers, everything was great!
This productive struggle focus makes me hopeful that many people are working to (make) math education in BPS more beneficial for all students.
Even though educators came from different backgrounds, it seemed that we all have one purpose-helping students to be the best they can be.
We asked, “What's one thing you learned today that might benefit your students?” Sample responses:
I would like to think about how I am over scaffolding classroom routines. I want to make “why” we do these routines more visible. I also want to allow students to be more meta cognitive about how these routines help us to solve problems we do not initially know the answer to.
Push students toward the why of the math concept rather than just an answer to a problem.
Increase classroom culture with more entry points that promote risks and trust within peers.
