THANK YOU for those that attended our Literacy for ALl Edcamp on 1/16 on the topic "How do we support literacy development for students with significant disabilities?” held at the Carter School/Frederick Middle School library. We had 18 people attend the session from 10 different BPS schools or departments. 100% of participants (13 out of 13 exit ticket responses) said that they would recommend this session to a colleague. Additional comments from participants:
“I was just reflecting on the PD last night and wanted to send a quick note of thanks! I loved all of the information and the passion with which it was presented. It was really inspiring.”
“It was great to hear what is working at other schools!”
“Being able to connect with peers that have had our student was enjoyable. It was nice to meet other teachers who work with our population and to hear success stories with readtopia.”
“I got to meet people from other fields who are working well in this area.”
Based on this session, here’s some things that participants want to try in their own classrooms/schools:
“CAR and AIR method”
“One take away is the reminder to give each student “wait time” and to “invite” them to engage in the conversation.”
“I got ideas for scheduling to support shared reading times.”
What is an Edcamp?
Edcamps are “unconferences” where there is no pre-set session agenda. The New York Times describes Edcamps as “an innovative form of training with no predetermined speakers or sessions, led by the participants themselves.” At an Edcamp, participants create the session topics at the start of the event based on their interests and questions. Edcamps provide educators with a professional learning model for growing, connecting, and sharing expertise with others in the room.
Why Edcamp?
Edcamp is a chance to connect, learn from each other, and figure out together how to think through new ways to create deeper learning experiences for students. We hope you’ll leave with new ideas and new connections.
