Integrating SEL into Academics Learning Site
In a Learning Site, educators come together for a full day in a live classroom around a common area of practice (also can accommodate a ½ day model). Participants talk with the host teacher and set goals for their own classrooms. Participants who continue the learning through virtual follow-up sessions are also able to earn an academic ladder credit.
Integrating SEL in Academics Learning Site @ Greenwood starts on 12/13: The Telescope Network and the BPS Office of Health & Wellness are co-hosting a Learning Site that starts on 12/13, from 6:30 to 7:15 pm on Zoom. The Learning Site includes 4 1-hour virtual sessions as well as a day of peer observation all focused on the question, “How do we integrate SEL practices into academic settings?” Peer observation will be hosted by Sheila Gonzalez, Ariane Lazarte, & Rosemary Sullivan at Greenwood K-8 on December 14 from 9:15 am to 3:00 pm. THANK YOU for all the educators that attended the Learning Site at the Sarah Greenwood K-8 in Dorchester on the topic “How do we integrate SEL practices into academic settings?” Our host teachers were Sheila Gonzalez, Ariane Lazarte, & Rosemary Sullivan and the debrief facilitator was Johanna Soto Gonzalez. We had 6 people attend the session from 3 different BPS schools or departments.
After the session, 100% of participants (2 out of 2 exit ticket responses) said that they would recommend this session to a colleague. Additional comments from participants:
One thing I observed during this session that might benefit my students is having an accessible color coded card that they can hold to and name their feeling without it being a disruption to the class
I believe that staff can integrate SEL into their classroom which will allow them to build better relationships with students
Seeing the SEL practices implemented in real time and the thoughtful debrief session with the teachers afterwards really got me thinking about SEL in a whole new light.
We asked, “What's one thing you learned today that might benefit your students?” Sample responses:
I will create a whole class mood tracker that I can use on a daily basis to track where my class is as a whole.
I would like to be more intentional in naming SEL competencies with staff
