Secondary Literacy Learning Site

In a Learning Site, educators come together for a full day in a live classroom around a common area of practice (also can accommodate a ½ day model). Participants talk with the host teacher and set goals for their own classrooms. Participants who continue the learning through virtual follow-up sessions are also able to earn an academic ladder credit.

Secondary Literacy Beyond ELA: Informational and Primary text

If you or an educator you know is working toward improving secondary literacy under challenging context, this is an opportunity to join other educators for a ½ day in a live classroom around a common area of practice. This learning site on 11/8/22 places the question of "How do we promote critical thinking and productive struggle with text?" within the context of diverse learners. The site will demonstrate one teacher's approach to answering this question while facing the challenges presented by below grade level reading skills, ELLs, IEPs and decreased stamina as a result of the pandemic. After the observation educators have a chance to think through and debrief with the host teacher around the hows and whys of their teaching practice with potential for follow up coaching sessions for an ALC/PDPs.

THANK YOU to the teachers who attended the Learning Site at EMK. Our host teacher was Caroline Abraham (Grade 9 History @ EMK). We had 8 participants join from 8 different BPS schools/departments serving populations representing grades K-12 join this session.

100% (8 out of 8 exit ticket responses) of educators would recommend this session to a colleague. Here are some takeaways from the exit ticket.

"I now have a better understanding for how to descaffold."

"Affirming students allows engagement"

"I would like to create units more driven towards open ended questions/ DBQ’s."
