Hornet
The largest species of wasp in the UK, the hornet is an impressive sight, and has a powerful sting to match. As with the other social wasps, the sting is only used for subduing prey, or in self-defence, left to themselves they will not attack people. Hornets make large nests similar to those of the other social species, chewing off bits of wood for use in construction. All castes are instantly recognisable by their size, and the extensive red markings on the thorax.
