Mottled Grasshopper - Myrmeloetettix maculatus
Habitat: Heaths and other dry places
Size: 11-15mm
Species account: As the name suggests the Mottled Grasshopper tends to have a blotchy pattern of colouration, mixing green, grey and brown shades. The pronotum shows a sharply indented pattern and adults have a red tip to the abdomen when mature. Males have distinctly clubbed tips to their antennae (slightly thickened in females) which droop outwards, instantly distinguishing them from other similar species. The song is a series of short buzzes rising to a crescendo before coming to an abrupt halt.
