Meadow Grasshopper

Habitat: Grassland

Size: 12-20mm

Species account: A common and widespread species, found in grassland habitats. Females are distinctive amongst UK grasshoppers in having very small and undeveloped wings which reach now more than half way down the abdomen. Males have more developed wings which may reach almost to the tip of the abdomen. In both sexes the sides of the pronotum are near parallel distinguishing from all UK species other than the lesser marsh grasshopper. The most common colouration is green, but brown and even pink forms are common. The song is a short burst, repeated every 3-4 seconds.
