Grebes
Grebes are small to medium sized waterbirds, which are active hunters of fish, submerging frequently to hunt their prey. The positioning of their feet a long way back on the body means that they are very strong swimmers, but somewhat ungainly on land. Great-crested and Little Grebes are common throughout the year on water bodies across the UK whilst the other three species are rare breeders and winter visitors.
Great-crested Grebe - Common and widespread throughout the year. Distinctive orange and black head markings in breeding plumage, more drab in winter.
Little Grebe - Smallest UK species. Summer plumage a striking black and red, more drab in winter, but retains distinctive fluffy rear.
