Size: Wing length 10-15.5mm
Species account: The commonest of the Volucella species in the UK, being easily found in most woods. Commonly seen on bramble flowers, but will feed from other flowers as well. Males patrol territories in woods, often defending a shaft of sunlight from intruders. The white band on the abdomen makes this amongst the most distinctive of all UK hoverflies.
