Chrysotoxum elegans

Habitat: Woodland

Size: Wing length 9-12mm

Species account: A scarce species of southern England. Smaller and narrower than Chrysotoxum cautum with wider and typically more sinuate black bands. The first and second antennal segments are roughly equal in length. Separation from Chrysotoxum verralli is trickier still, the latter species typically has the black front margin to tergite 2 straight rather than arcuate and antennal segment 3 shorter than the combined length of 1 and 2 (equal in elegans).
